First off I almost purchased the Swedish firesteele at bass pro a few months ago, but was put off by it's small size and near 20 dollar price tag. What can I say? I like my rods big and cheap.I'm glad I waited though. This is an awesome product at a great price. super easy to use and the perfect size. Ton larger than the swedish fire steele. The only thing I was disappointed in, and its my fault since it was 100% assumption, was that the handle is plastic and not metal. I don't remember reading anywhere that it's metal and not plastic, it just kinda looked like metal from the pictures. and for you folks at home I have a little advice. any item that is viewed as a "survival" thingy, the highest review is always more about the posters knowledge on survival than it is about the item. so take them with a grain of salt. Pick up a Gobspark steel and you can pretty much ditch the rest of your fire gear. This bad boy will give you an impressive shower of superheated sparks, guaranteed to light your tinder easily. The handle is at once simple and ingenious, allowing you to aim your sparks more accurately than with any other steel I've used. When the chips are down, this 'steel will get the job done, every time. And you won't find any better company on the web (or in the B&M world for that matter) than [...].If you want foolproof, keep some 100% cotton balls with you. Smearing them with petroleum jelly will turn them into backwoods napalm. This will always light, and burn for five minutes or more. The beauty of the firesteel is it doesn't have to stay dry, it doesn't need fuel and it doesn't run out. Well, maybe after several thousand fires. This product met all of my expectations. I recently took it camping with my son and we took turns starting fires with it. We found that it worked well with a number of different tinders including:Cotton ball with petroleum jelly fire starter sticks (shaved into small slivers) Dry tinder from local plants Dryer lint Some of the items started easier than others however; the Firesteel gave off excellent sparks throughout the process. The product was sturdy in my hand (not too big but not too small) and offered plenty of surface area to strike. If you are looking for a quality firesteel this is the one to get. |
